Okay, look. Chromium’s monopoly is definitely a concern. But Firefox is also not the answer here.

In a way, you are giving Firefox leeway to do as they want since they are the only thing stopping Chromium’s monopoly. That’s equally wrong.

Use the better, more secure technology, until we have something better. Don’t use Firefox because it’s not Chromium - that’s definitely not healthy.

@notesnook@fosstodon.org As long as Firefox remains the best platform for uBlock Origin, I’ll keep using it.

while althing it is great things like librewolf exists. They do not develop much anything but superficial features. If Firefox ceased to be developed it is highly unlikely LibreWolf would continue to be maintained.

Yeah, like there’s better, more secure technology available. Firefox is a fantastic browser still, and basically whatever bad things you think Firefox does, Chrome does it way worse.

The main advantage Chrome has is that websites don’t bother to test in other browsers that much anymore, so some will work better. Especially Google’s.

But Google has enough power as it is. Don’t give them more.

I pulled a uno-reverse: I only test on Firefox and occasionally fix a chrome bug when I’m notified (I’m not given enough resources to test on both).

Imho Firefox is the better tech. Still having manifest V2, which allows full blown ad blocking, is worth potential downsides in other areas.

Ah, I assumed there were some areas where Firefox had been found lacking relative to Chromium browsers.

For me, the current version of any major browser or fork with consistently applied security updates and capability of running the full version of Ublock Origin is sufficiently secure for my threat model. Given that, and that they all offer the feature set I want, wouldn’t it be reasonable to avoid Chromium browsers because I don’t want to encourage the Chromium monopoly?

That’s only a small fraction of why I use Firefox, to be fair, but suppose for argument’s sake that I don’t care about MV3 extensions, Firefox Containers, etc… Would be it be so wrong for not wanting there to be a Chromium monopoly to be why I chose Firefox or one of its forks?

Updated my phone last night, this morning I was greeted by a notification that a Firefox update had granted itself unrestricted access to my location data. So now I’m trying a couple of android FF forks, I’m getting off before they hit the full downslide into enshitification.

Huh… mine has that, too. I feel like I haven’t given FF that permission. Maybe I loaded a map app at some point, but I don’t recall.

I hope they’re not doing that maliciously.

Thing is, I specifically deny every app unrestricted access to my location. I KNOW for a fact I denied it all permissions. When I cut FF location permission to “get fucked” I noticed it also had camera and mic unrestricted access. Also the in app telemetry options were all set to share with Mozilla. They also were not when I set it up…
