  • Because a lot of people depend on references from their previous job, including their managers and such, for the next one. Burning that bridge because you wouldn’t spend your last few weeks at the company doing what was asked of you is not a good look. It makes you appear difficult/like you hold grudges. It also might cost you things like your severance.

If it’s that important to you to flip a middle finger to your previous employer then go ahead, but I think most people will decide the cons vastly outweigh the pros. Especially since that person will get trained anyway so you can’t even meaningfully change things.

  • It is astounding how many comments on that article don’t know about 3-2-1, which is industry standard. Yet they feel qualified enough to say that this is “putting all your eggs in one basket” and make it sound like this is a bad idea.

I mean, do they not realize that was the exact same problem 10 years ago with 10TB HDD’s? And that we’ve had a protocol for literally decades to address it? Have they not heard of backups? Are they under the impression they’re only allowed to buy one?

I swear it’s not enough for everyone to have an opinion on everything. It’s not even enough for them to vocalize it. They have to sound smug and act like these companies are completely foolish for even making these. I don’t even understand how arrogant you have to be to operate like that on a regular basis.

Sincerely, some with several 18-20TB HDD’s drooling for this.

  • Those occupy so little space and are so easy to avoid. I’m a little surprised it’s that annoying. Like I get it on the psychological level, only wanting to have the stuff you want on your machine. But frankly, I forgot those things were even on my tower because I haven’t seen them in years.

I know this sounds like a critique of your stance, but I’m kind of just thinking out loud here. I get where you’re coming from, and obviously it just doesn’t bother me as much. But now I’m afraid it’s going to in a few weeks lol

  • Yeah, I don’t mean to blame you or anyone in particular. I’m more just expressing sympathy because, as you said, people have to eat ultimately. And if they are putting time into a FLOSS project they’re generally not getting paid.

I’m also just a little salty because I saw yet another thread the other day where people said that Reaper, a fantastic DAW, is free (it isn’t). When I explained to them that they just don’t have any sort of security or licensing requirements and instead use an honor system where you can try the program fully fledged and then pay the $40 when you decide you want to keep it, they started argue with me about how it’s still free and they don’t have to pay anything if they don’t want to and all companies are evil blah blah.

Those are the kind of people I just don’t understand and it makes me really bitter because a team is truly trying to make a professional grade tool available to everyone and these people are actively sabotaging that effort, whether they know it or not.
