You can get a car, just don’t connect your phone to it.

There is a link about how to start on the git page. The initial work is fixing compiler warnings and other easy bugs.
I’m thinking to learn more to help with the Google TV app.
I ended up going with a synology Nas as i didn’t need high performance CPU and wanted a turn key solution. For what you get hardware wise, its low value, but if you factor in software and support, it works out to OK value.
You mentioned your parents will be using this. What services are you hoping to host? Outside network access is another rabbit hole.
Check the hardware requirements of the services you plan the host, but from what ir sounds like, you would likely be better served with decent pc 8th gen Intel with the storage in a 4 bay NAS or internal to the PC.
I suggested 8th gen Intel as a min for video transcoding (if needed)
Running on a synology, but it’s not cheap. I like having direct access to my stuff if I can. Next step is cloud backup of my local , i think borg or something is very popular.
I’m going to say that self hosting becomes a fun hobby once you get your core services running. Core in this case means the services that are bringing you into selfhosting.
I’m just going to say, you don’t need to run everything from one machine.
Very true
Cloudflare tunnel works for my jellyfin server.
It would be fun if some government required companies that off free services to disclose how they make money and allow each user to see their particular value. This might help open some eyes…
I wish there was a paid google of no spying… I mean what does google one get me, but the ability for google to spy on more or my data?
Yeah, they do, but no mobile app support… I don’t think
Thanks. Just got a synology and want to try replacing googlee docs. The CODE docker looks promising… Need to understand how to get tunneling working first. 😂
Agreed, I want to have 8GB of RAM for sure. Thanks for the input. Now time to save up.
I’m thinking of the DS423 for media, photos, and notes. No transcoding.
I would need to think about this. There are times I need to look at photos from weeks ago, but not too often…
Moving over to the Synology would make it a LOT easier to switch OSs on my phone and not install any Google services. 🤔 Let me think more about this.
Does this mean the Synology is exposed to the public internet?
My biggest issue with Dell is the inability to upgrade the power supply 😭
Which way are you migrating?
I’ve never heard of this, but what happens if it shuts down? How is this really self hosting vs getting an generic we hosting service and storing files there ?
You got it all wrong, everyone is on Threads … Nah, I just subscribed to learn about starting some self hosting. I’m running a local media server, which was easy, but want to branch out to photo backup from my various phones/accounts. Getting nervous that Google will just close my account one day for no reason. Anyway, don’t fret, the community doesn’t need to be 💯 today, it’ll get there.
I personally believe reddit will live on, that’s just the way its going to be. I dropped off, but my account is still there.
This is the real answer to everyone. Limit access to the Bluetooth connection or don’t use the headunit.
