The nostalgia is for sure a big factor. Windows 95/98 were my first memories of computers, but XP was the first OS I was really allowed to discover on my own. I was quite the fan, when my family “upgraded” to a barely-meets-the-minimum-specs Vista Ready™ PC I soon after tried to “downgrade” it to XP.

During which I managed to bork something and nothing would boot, not even the recovery disc I had burned. Thus started a three day troubleshooting journey to fix the family PC. I think my parents were too startled by my determination to figure it out to get angry at me.

And here I am almost two decades later, spending the last three days trying to manually setup a seedbox despite there being a myriad of easy deployment methods. Most of those three days have been focused on setting up a firewall, restricting access to docker containers behind a VPN, and of course the ol’ troublemaker DNS.

The feeling when I figure out something I’ve been struggling with is still just as exhilarating as when I saw Windows XP boot up for the first time on the family PC way back when. If you want to make a joke like this, you should really use a sarcasm tag or similar indicators that they’re not your truly-held beliefs. Unfortunately modern conservatives have kicked Poe’s Law into overdrive, and if one leaves a comment like this one wihout a clear indication of sarcasm, people really have no choice but to assume they’re a bigot.

If I were having high-stakes conversations, I might agree, but any slight delays in updates is unlikely to affect me. I’m not a high-stakes target of any sort.

From what I’ve read so far, it seems like it’s going to be the most convoluted install process I’ll have encountered in my self-hosting journey. I’m excited to tackle it, but also a bit overwhelmed. Which is why I’ve been putting it off :P

Any ports used in docker will be open on your computer and accessible to any device in your network.

However, to open up a port to the internet, you’d have to do port-forwarding on your router. If you haven’t done that, any incoming connections will just be dropped at the router-level.

That’s actually so cool and the more I think about it the more it’s making me really want to host my own Lemmy instance. Can I ask what sort of hardware resources you’re running it on?
