This is why you should have file history versioning on. With backup this is a most.

Both KDE and GNOME are good when you compare it to anything Windows have today.
I personally prefer KDE because of much customization support. I have it working with many keyboard shortcuts. I would miss the settings panel in hyperland.
GNOME is simple and elegant. Showing only what is needed. I can really understand people liking it. I like but just miss some small details like the keyboard shortcuts thing and focusing etc. How GNOME works is different mindset which O just have not learned. But GNOME looks good and have everything covered.
Xfc and lxd just need some more love from the developers. There are very few of them so I completely understand. Money issue.
Microsoft makes all the decisions for you.
Try using a virtual machine before doing a full switch
I think on laptops Windows i trying to encrypt the drives. Maybe online if you are logged in to a Microsoft account for bitlocker to save the encryption key. Encrypting the drives should be your decision to take.
Mandriva. Yes, old and no longer exist. Forst distro i started to to use permantly on desktop is Fedora. The server has always been Ubuntu since the Mandriva time when I first learned about Linux. I think 2005. CS server etc. Desktop was 2024 when MS screwed up Windows too much
Mio@feddit.nuto Linux@lemmy.ml•Which areas of Linux would benefit most from further standardization?323·3 months agoConfiguration gui standard. Usually there is a config file that I am suppose to edit as root and usually done in the terminal.
There should be a general gui tool that read those files and obey another file with the rules. Lets say it is if you enable this feature then you can’t have this on at the same time. Or the number has to be between 1 and 5. Not more or less on the number. Basic validation. And run the program with --validation to let itself decide if it looks good or not.
Timeshift for snapshots and deja backups for files
Mio@feddit.nuto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How do you like to transfer large files between friends across the internet?English3·4 months agoThe user can choose. Please note you first much accept another client by its fingerprint.
Yes, you can optimize a lot. Especially with Linux. I did the same and even started to replace program that did too much, bloated, with my own programs. To speed up the development I did it with AI and Cursor.
I use Inoreader. Not selfhosted but that is everything i have at that company. The articles are public anyway so I don’t care that much.
My workflow is article maximize and try to hide everything else like menubar and list of sources etc. I use jk to navigate for scrolling and v/space to go to article. I use vimium extension so d for close tab with article. Article is automatically marked as read as I scroll. It takes 5 min per day to go through. I think if I would selfhost then I would try tiny rss.
I don’t use it on phone. No need. I am at my computer most of the time.
45 to 55 watt.
But I make use of it for backup and firewall. No cloud shit.
Yes, trail period of MS Office. But when it runs out then they have to choose what to do. Buy or pick anything else? I think the problem here is that they know they will get full compatibility with others if they buy MS Office. MS Office does not even follow their own protocol standard. Some know that the webbased version is free. That makes it really hard to compete. I hope EU fix this.
I would make it controlled by voice. Just need to figure out a way to tell the user what the system can do. Computer, help me shop for medicin and hold up a box infront of the screen with what you use today. This should be simple. If you make it to complex like it is today then elder people will not use the computer.
Basically a personal assistent/guide driven OS. Start with rethink the experience you would have if you went to the mall and have a human assistent with a big screen to show you everything.
Mio@feddit.nuto KDE@lemmy.kde.social•Let's make Windows 10 the last version ever used!33·6 months agoLinux is ready for the webbrowser. Office? No, MS Office does not run and still the marketshare for MS Office is very high on Windows. It does not run on Linux. If the alternatives were better then people would use them. Gaming? Maybe for Steam OS but that is only one distro. If you choose something else you will not have such smooth experience. The user might be better off by moving to console. Any business tool like Adobe or custom built Windows tools does not work. This is very hard to change. Hence many can’t even move to mac os due to this. Media Player/View Pictures? Yes, Linux is ready here.
Can you choose to have Linux pre installed on a new laptop? No, not normally.
There is still some work to do. I hope we get there. We are close for home users.
Personally I use Fedora with Firefox.
If that happens we would have a new minimum good base line. That means all other OS have to work on be better than Linux. So good competition would happen.
When mom tried Linux Mint she said: there is no wait time at shutdown, I am use to wait on Windows Update.
They will notice that their programs no longer work. .exe is not working. But my mom said: there is no longer any wait time at shutdown. She meant waiting for Windows update.
This may lead to people looking for options. That is good for the competition.
Linux may be ready to receive some of the users. Not in all areas. There is still work to be done. Unfortunately the users want to change now so it may be to other OS. Maybe MAC or Chrome OS. Unfortunately there is no easy transition or as camping for moving to Linux, like double click this .exe and migration begins.
I moved to Fedora with KDE but that was only possible due to I am a power user. Average Joe will fail and find suitable replacement applications takes time.
I hope some companies with money takes the opportunity to take care of those lost souls. Maybe Red har have money for TV ads?
There are web extension that check for bookmakers that responds with 404 and automatically deletes them.
