Agreed. The hardware was essential in my journey. From a pi4b to a second hand mini pc to a small cluster with added cloud storage. I had to figure out a cheap and sturdy setup for reliant self hosting.

2·4 months agoSome youtubers like Networkchuck and Chris from BigBearTechWorld. Especially the last one convinced me with his structured and kind style. His Discourse forum is really helpful.
Legendary. Love what they are doing. I have issues with getting people on their platform because of the cartoonish style.

I’m running Home Assistant on mine at the moment. It’s amazing. Really. Apart from being an great smart home solution I’ve found it a good solution to create dashboards for life.
I have set up our family calendar, train schedules that change routes depending on the time. Waste collection notifications. It warns me to get a raincoat and umbrella in the morning. I get news headlines for my interests…
Before that I’ve tried a lot. It was my first step into home labbing 2 years ago. It brought me back to my youth. Breaking the family computer and trying to fix it before anyone noticing it.
Most of the stuff I ran used Docker.

Within a year I grew out of my pi setup and bought a second hand mini Lenovo that now runs Proxmox. Minor investment, huge upgrade. Moved away from dockers also.
The pi is a fun gateway drug.
You can, manually. Sounds worse than it is.

I stared a year ago, from scratch. Fumbled around with a Raspberry for a few months and then bought a mini PC for 100 euros. (Lenovo tiny m73 with 8GB of RAM and a 500 GB ssd) That’s all you need.
Proxmox is a great way to go because it’s quite easy to create and delete virtual machines. You’ll be starting over quite a bit in the beginning.
I recommend documenting your stuff so you can easily start over. Claude.ai has been a great help for me to troubleshoot. AI is awesome to get the typos out of your config files.

I suppose it works best with haos installed on the Rpi
HomeAssistant is still supported on Pi4b
It’s support for the rpi3 that is getting fased out.
Joplin notes. A really nice notetaking app you can selfhost. Simple enough but stil verry advanced.

Nearly all digital media is locked so in order to back up something you own you’ll have to break the lock. Fuck. Them. (And the people who voted for these laws)
