  • I was actually left feeling like Link was something of the villain of Link’s Awakening. The monsters are only fighting for their own survival because they know everyone will cease their existence if Link wakes the Wind Fish. The bitter sweet ending as Link remembers the villagers before the dream fades away.

The game sets up Marin as such a sweet character with a sweet relationship to Link and ambitions to leave the island. It is saddening knowing she fades away at the end of the game.

I choose to interpret the fact that Marin and Tarin completely go missing after she leaves Animal Village signifies that maybe the dream is falling apart toward the end of the game and that they were never “real” in the first place.

Despite being “illusions”, dreams and the memories of them feelings can still have impact and evoke emotions from us. The ending hits me the same way a dream of seeing a long lost loved one again does or the way a dream of an sweet experience of someone who never even existed does.

  • But I don’t use those services; they still keep my data.

Exactly why we need data privacy laws. Sadly there are “profiles” out there for all of us, whether you chose to be tracked or not. Personally I think that any kind of sharing of personal data with marketers should be illegal nor should it be legal for any entity to purchase personal data without a signed consent form from the person in question.

That’d probably end “free” services and our credit score system in the United States but honestly that kind of data collection is equivalent to stalking and unethical.

There is a 3rd argument which I think is a bit more valid in “I value the service I receive in exchange for my personal data”

Using the internet without an adblocker, noscript, and whatever else is really nasty. But even if you aren’t on these platforms, marketers are still building profiles on you. Honestly we need data privacy legislation and some real talk about marketing and the costs of using the internet as a society.

  • That’s one thing I always like about handheld games during that era especially the Zelda and Mario Land games. They weren’t under the thumb of the original developers that created the series so they were willing to take more risks.

I read in some interviews about the development of A Link to the Past they wanted to allow the player to map any item to either Y or B but Miyamoto made them change it back to just allowing an item equipped to Y and the sword always being equipped.

Link’s Awakening is next on my list, I’ve just started it and I’m looking forward to the rest of it!
