I’ve got my steam library loaded, and I’ll soon have a set of emulators. It’s all streamed from the hosting pc, from a set of docker containers that auto load/unload

So… I started “Self hosting” wolf/games on whales this past week from my laptop, this lets me play easy on the tv with a gamepad, and with some tweaks, will let my kid play while I use the laptop. ( https://games-on-whales.github.io/wolf/stable/user/quickstart.html). This does want a decent gaming pc though.
Very neat stuff overall.
Bazzite running on a framework 16, my only complaint is the fans.

9·3 months agoOn multi user: any thoughts on working with oidc/ldap or the like? I use authentik at home for many other services and it would be great to keep the single login.
List of different types of login types: https://integrations.goauthentik.io/
I did the matrix for grandparent talk. One really wanted to chat and I didn’t want my kid on Facebook, the grandparent’s medium of choice. Kid loves it, most grandparents love it, I even got video chat working
I host habitica for the family, that plus jellyfin it’s a start. (Also a Minecraft server)

20·6 months agoThis is my favorite from my detection

It’s an M3 nut on a 3D print.
Element call worked using element web, tested just now. Called a phone using element x
Video and voice chat with matrix works well once it’s set up. I… Struggled a bit setting it up, and I don’t think I’m the exception.
Haven’t tried screen sharing yet.

5·7 months agoHaving gone through it, a matrix server is not newbie friendly yet.
(Though I agree that’s a great idea)

2·7 months agoHonestly? It was a pain, I used several different guides and they were all out of date in different ways. Unfortunately, it looks like external users are having connectivity problems, that I’ll try to solve next week when I have time.

18·7 months agoMy kid is 9, and it’s all Minecraft and I just installed a non federated synapse server so they can text family without having to deal with parental controls. At that age, I figure it’s more about having fun, and if they learn typing skills on the way, big win

2·7 months agoOidc, and it’ll end up opening up to more family around the holidays, as authentik is also my matrix user provider (shut out of the real world because I wanted my 9 year old to be able to text and video call family). Mealie was a piece of cake compared to the whole synapse environment

2·7 months agoThanks! I finally linked mealie with authentik. It was a 10 minute task, if that, but this post pushed me over

2·7 months agoI’m running https://github.com/awinterstein/habitica/ and have built the android app locally to get access. I really need to update and build it again eventually.
It’s not seamless, but it functions for the family.

9·7 months agoExamples of the type of service I’m looking at: a media server, photos app (to replace Google Photos), game servers, recipe management, home automation… What other things do you know about that are fun/interesting/useful?
I use:
- Immich for photo hosting
- Jellyfin and navidrome for media (video and audio)
- Calibre and calibre-web for ebooks
- Minecraft server
- Mealie for recipes.
- Home assistant for automation
- Habitica for habit forming
- And I have fpp for my Christmas lights (the application is xlights, fpp is the server that runs the scripts)
All of these I like.

9·7 months agoUgh, I just got matrix with video working and it took way too long.
When I set it up, I did not know better.
Now? Inertia. Nginx already does it for other things, I haven’t bothered to move home assistant over because home assistant works ( all but one days in a cycle)
I understand.
I learned again for the nth time that home assistant doesnt like refreshing my cert, and I can’t go to the site to refresh the cert unless it has a valid cert…
Maybe I’ll fix it tomorrow. It’s valid again now.
If you are getting the authentik login screen and being redirected, it’s either the redirect url not being right or the app itself not being configured for authentik.
Source: my limited knowledge with authentik and other apps.
