Lots of organizations use “Open” because it has positive connotations in people’s minds. They aren’t trying to suggest that they specifically follow the FOSS philosophy.

I’d be more sympathetic to that mindset if it was anyone other than TC saying this. He’s a smart dude and I have every confidence he could figure out how to use a new piece of software.
Translation:“I refuse to try the thing that people tell me might make my life better. I prefer to rant and complain to random strangers on a public forum rather than accepting that a solution to my problem may exist”
It’s funny, this is not at all his stance when it comes to hardware and appliances. It doesn’t even sound like something he’d say.
I know a lot of people (even people who work in IT) who automatically assume free=shitty. It’s hard to appreciate just how effective and influential FOSS has been as a business model unless you are immersed in the world of software.
He’s a pretty awesome educational YouTuber but this is a dumb take. To be fair, he’s not a programmer or software guy. I believe his background is in engineering.
It’s not FOSS, but Obsidian operates on a folder of plain markdown files, so it’s at least easy to try.
It’s too bad you can’t downvote posts on this community. It’s almost as though it would be valuable to reduce the visibility of bait posts with eye-catching headlines
Obsidian is my favourite. It’s not FOSS, but it is totally plaintext-based, which is close to just as good.
We like to say “nobody ever gets fired for buying [Microsoft|Adobe|Oracle]”. Basically, if you buy shitty proprietary stuff from a company that is known for making shitty proprietary stuff, it’s not a surprise. If you take a risk on an open alternative, you are somehow staking your own reputation on the success of it. We’ve been burned countless times by the corporate software world, but we keep crawling back because nobody in the government (or most orgs) cares about software freedom.
I work for the Canadian government, and these are horrible. They worm their way into everything. We are slaves to proprietary formats. There is very little will to switch to open standards for something like this.

KDE connect is the only similar one I’m aware of. I’m surprised it didn’t work well for you, but I’ve personally never tried it with Mac
Microsoft office is browser-based now with office 365, though obviously that’s not free… Google docs is pretty widely popular though so you can usually break people away from PowerPoint and word with that.
I fear the day Gaben isn’t around anymore. Hopefully there is a succession plan for the company to be handed over to someone with similar values.

Seriously though, I would recommend the YouTube channel “Computerphile”. It’s by the same guy who does Numberphile but it’s all about computer science topics. They often give a bit of the history for how things came about. Tom Scott’s YouTube channel has many computer science topics as well, though AFAIK he hasn’t done any recently.
This made me realize how much I hate the YouTube metagame.

It’s above your pay grade. If I were you, I’d reach out privately and suggest that the customer seek a competitor’s product that has the features that want, and tell them that there is no desire within the company to support free software or self hosting.
