ahah thanks, for posterity this is how far i got. Only needed to add the command to follow https://github.com/Death916/lemmy-federation-bot
I was working on something like this to add a bot user and follow active communities but got distracted. Looks like I can quit that side project hahah
U can use headscale and make it pretty much 100% self hosted
Y I just turned off jerboa updates because I’m not upgrading until captcha is reenabled just email verification wastes smtp plan emails
What I use as well it sgreat and I keep it open in a column on my side monitor all day so I can casually glance at the news whenever
I use tailscale on my pihole container and add the tailscale ip as dns for all tailscale devices. Then u just have tailscale one your phone laptop or w.e and will be using that dns. No ports opened at all.
https://selfhosted.show/ literally the self hosted podcast it’s pretty good imo.
instead of hostnames try and use an ip for everything. if not im not sure sorry

this is the nginx conf i used sinc elemmy used nginx for the server in the container. then in nginx proxy manager had to add locations for /pictrs /api /pictrs
/feeds
/nodeinfo
ya i used nginx proxy manager. you have to put some custom locations in and passthrough some headers for reverse proxy to work.
nice glad to hear it.
If you’re not using arm remove the arm tags. Not sure about the network issue as u should be able to declare networks in compose easily. Id check if some formatting got messed up in copying it over as the yaml is usually whitespace sensitive. Is there more to the pictrs error because that image is pretty basic and jus pulls it doen
I wrote a small guide here. https://lemmy.death916.xyz/post/3068
But suffice to say their docker compose sux and requires some tweaking. I got mine running behind nginx proxy manager on a remote host
I didn’t notice either because the .16 version worked for me without a tag. When installing .17 I started getting errors and had to search around.
If it’s just for local you can add dns hostnames in the gui. I have all my lan boxes defined in pihole with the .lan under the local dbs ootio. Might even work for external too
