    Jup. I think I’ve had some 3 actual issues the past 2 years on EndeavourOS. But the Endeavour team did a good job of warning me on Discord/RSS or at least provide tutorials and explanations afterwards.

    One of the issues was in regard to Grub (fixed by Timeshift rollback and a one-liner), one was in regard to some rogue Nvidia bug crashing the login window (fixed by Timeshift rollback and waiting a few days before updating again), and one was Nvidia removing support for GTX1000 cards and older (Nvidia, WHYYYYYYYY?!).

    For reference, I had what felt like similar annoying bugs (and much worse) on Windows 10 about every month, but without any useful support from Microsoft. :(

    EDIT: speaking of the devil. A fourth issue just popped up.


  • So you want to be able to stream Gimp and have a shared drive with your PC’s sheets, it needs to be open source and with no limitations?

    I’d just do gimp+Discord+google docs, but if you want it to be open source and all-in-one then go checkout Nextcloud. I think that’s as free as you get, if even foundry is too limiting.

    … I was referencing systemd and familiarity of use in regard to OP. Debian just happened to be mentioned, it comes per default with systemd, and it’s my personal first choice for servers. Though, taking context into account, OP did say they originally came from Ubuntu and made it sound like they were trying to optimize their system since it “only” had 4(8)GB memory in total.

    I do believe Debian with systemd is more similar to Ubuntu than Alpine is to Ubuntu. My point was not so much about Debian vs Alpine in general as it was specific to efficiency in regard to memory usage, with the sole reason to change to Alpine over Debian (or any OS which uses systemd, really) purely for memory savings being rather weak when systemd only uses some <50MB in memory, the computer has 4GB+ of it, and the user already is familiar with Debian-based flavors which use systemd.

    So no, Debian is obviously not “obviously superior to Alpine”, just as systemd isn’t too heavy to run on computers with 4GB of RAM - unless you’re trying to push the computer to its limits.

    Huh? I don’t think you need anything near as memory efficient as Alpine for something which has 4GB of RAM, unless you’re doing it for the sole purpose of pushing the machine and yourself to the limit.

    I only ever consider dropping Debian and/or Systemd when going below 512MB RAM. I’ve run most of my public-facing homelab stuff on a 1GB VPS till recently, including multiple webservers such as FoundryVTT, and Docker containers such as a Wireguard server, Jenkins, Searxng, etc… It rarely used more than ~60% of the RAM, but I obviously couldn’t run Immich or any heavy services on it.


  • That’s weird. I just tested it with a friend (I’m on Endeavour, she’s on Win11, the server is VPS with Debian running the newest Synapse and Element-web). Audio works fine both ways with no mic config required, streaming is a little laggy when viewing the screen and stream next to each other, but that’s all.

    EDIT: No, you’re right. Audio within streams seem to fail. I remember Discord having the same problem (hence why I use Vesktop), but if Windows also suffers this shortcoming? I’m pretty sure I remember it working a month ago, so there should be a bug report in Synapse (or element).




  • The claim above was off the top of my head, but I’ve found multiple pages of results describing the panic that ensued.

    Now, Microsoft (Copilot and Github) are less than clear on what exactly is used for training, but the general consensus seems to be, that they don’t train on private repositories. Though there appears to be some confusion about this, especially regarding Microsoft’s honesty about not using loopholes (this article might be faked, I haven’t tried confirming it, though, this topic is a shit show ripe with miscommunication, misinformation, and quite a lot of confusion and fear regardless).

    It appears that the specific issue I was referring to required a human error for copilot being able to train on the private repositories. Namely, some unfortunate fool temporarily making the repository public (in which case it obviously isn’t private anymore, and therefore free for grabs by scrapers). Usually this wouldn’t be a problem, since no indexer or scraper can check all of Github all at once all the time, so the chance of a briefly exposed repository being cached is rather small, albeit always there.

    That said, Copilot, Bing, and Github are likely better integrated than Bing simply wasting resources on continuously scraping Github for new repositories. I personally imagine that Github saving resources by sending a signal to Bing when a repository is made public isn’t entirely unlikely (that’s something I might do, harboring no ill intentions), meaning that it is possible (though in no way confirmed) that Bing punishes briefly exposed Github repositories instantly by forever caching them.

    Is this 100% Microsoft being predatory? No, obviously not, since it requires a user error to happen in the first place, and since Copilot is technically only trained on public or exposed data. Though, Microsoft learning about this rather scammy behavior and simply classifying it a “low-impact-severity” and disabling the Bing cache for humans (but apparently not Copilot) doesn’t sit right with me. I’m sure that they knew exactly which kind of data they were working with during dataset sanitation, so they could have chosen not to use sensitive data or at least inform exposed clients that they are adding their cached secrets to Copilot.


  • Wasn’t it revealed that Microsoft was training their Copilot on Github repositories, including private ones such as paying coorporations believing their source code to be safe and secure, resulting in secrets suddenly being made semi-public?

    I feel that there were other incidents too, though I can’t remember them off the top of my head. Definitely not a place I’d recommend anyone to keep anything they love, even if they keep to best practices and don’t store secrets in their repositories.

    I love WINE and it’s forks, but man, how can any program produce so many errors during optimal operation? (A rhetorical question, as I believe we all know the tragicomedic reason being Microsoft)




  • I’m gonna be honest: I’ve been skimping on anti malware since i moved to Linux.

    Still keeping up the common sense part about running code you don’t know and running untrusted code and weird URLs in a virtual environment (well, except for the AUR perhaps), but I only scan for malware once or twice a year, if at all.

    Actually, I just did a scan with RKHunter which came back clean except for the usual false flags, which I find mildly suspicious as one would imagine there to be some malware with all the small time programmers and script kiddies in the Linux community.

    What are you using as anti malware? Anyone knows of good methods for set-and-forget or some good GUIs for easy containment management, scanning, and whitelisting? It can’t be that ClamAV, RKHunter, and chkrootkit are the only halfway decent AVs out there.


  • Hadn’t actually noticed it was Mac first before you mentioned it, but no, if it works for Mac, then it likely also works for Linux (and that’s what counts, right?).

    Contrary to my previous statement, I’ve actually tried downloading Zed. The first thing I noticed was the “sign in” in the top right corner. Feels rather unsightly, but no biggie. It appears to redirect to GitHub authorization, after which it fails with a “OAuthCallback”-error. Might be my fault, can’t remember if I’ve disabled or limited unnecessary functionality in GitHub.

    The design feels slick and most options are hidden away or represented by only a small icon with tooltips. It appears that no advanced settings page exists, as nearly everything is handled in JSON (initially thought that a visual settings page must have been hidden away deep down somewhere, but that appears to be wrong).

    Coop programming seems to be a big feature, but I’ll skip that as it appears to need setup.

    Also, the LLM part is not nearly as prominent as their front page makes it out to be, rather feels like an option than a prominent or forced feature, so that’s really nice.

    The included extensions (nice to have them as they’re no given) appear to focus on themes and syntax, can’t find any cross-development nor compilation related extensions which is just fine. Compilation is best handled in the terminal anyway.

    Overall it feels pretty solid, definitely different from the first impressions of their page. Might be even better with more diverse extensions, though, I haven’t looked at the internet for unlisted extensions, and I’m not sure how old the project is (the extensions might just not be made yet).

    There’s also no pop-ups, start pages with all kinds of featured content, nor settings or buttons that grab your attention away from your work (except the login button, perhaps. I would like to see what it looks like once logged in).

    I’m probably missing most features as my GitHub integration fails, but I’m overall positively surprised.



  • Huh? That’s quite interesting.

    I’ve been running a hacked-together script which uses a disembodied copy of Proton 8 (aka. copied to a portable drive, doesn’t need to have Steam installed to run) to launch my games from Itch and GoG.

    Hmm, just tried to use Proton 9.0-2 and the current experimental in my steamapps (which appears to be version 9.0-202), and it works just fine. Though, I guess Lutris’ implementations are quite a bit more advanced than my hacks (no debugging let’s goooo).

  • I guess you could also ask: “Does the pro-tier give one any options/additional functionality that the non-pro/non-donation tier doesn’t?”

    Obviously, if you have to pay for additional functionality (like settings/themes/updates) then it isn’t a simple ask for donation. Though, I’d argue to ignore trivialities such as “thank you”-emails and possibly a small visual-only token on the program that you paid/donated, as those barely count as “functionality”.
