There is still transcoding done thru the server, maybe depending on the app but the ones that use livekit it would.

Hosting costs money, maybe if you disable voice, video, uploads, and only allowed text it would be manageable but discord is free. I run my own chat server but it’s only for like 10 people.

Yeah, they are still using other companies models but it’s self hosted on our own hardware. I treat it as a Google search most of the time better but sometimes it gives me a GitHub link that never existed or a command option that exists for a different cli tool but not the one I’m using.

Yeah, maybe it’s because I run public sites on kubernetes at work that I’m not as scared but a good locked down network is fine. Thousands or businesses run public URLs, as long as you configure it right you are mostly good. There is always a risk of vulnerabilities in the software for immich, your proxy, your auth provider so doing it that way increases your attack surface than just the VPN.

Yeah, I have been learning more and just got oauth working last week. I found Plex a little after blockbuster went under and I had over a thousand movies and a few full TV shows. I have tried jellyfin but the lack of apps has been the issue for me. But as Plex does more of this it will get more and more worthless.

I’m overkill and use ubiquity but you can also use their entry level devices, I’m a fan of hardwiring the wifi points to a switch or the router itself thru poe so you don’t have to use a wifi band for the mesh.

Ehh, I dislike electron as I don’t like chrome and it uses up more of the computer, especially with a low powered laptops and thin clients. I would rather just have something hosted on a server, preferably my own, and use a webpage. Cupholders don’t get in the way usually or take up performance of the car.

It’s the usage they see used, not what the app itself is using. It’s like someone borrowed your car and paid for for just the gas and not the wear and tear. It matters to the PC user that they have less to go around and would rather use something without the overhead. I’m not against overhead when it makes sense, I use docker at home and kubernetes at work.
