Yep, knew it as soon as I saw the name, but I clicked the link for the American Gladiator Hamster ball

Like 20 years ago some pizza chain gave out a very cheap but very well made local multiplayer game similar to Mario Party for Xbox (like, maybe legit just Xbox, the very first one)
Everything was janky, but in a consistently janky way.
So if you picked it up for the first time, it didn’t make sense. Especially because it was just a hodgepodge of random minigames with the only consistent thing what color your avatar was. But it didn’t take long to learn the game logic, and the games were fun and had replay value. The most memorable thing is they put you in those hamster balls from American Gladiators, and that’s what was in the disc label.
I’d be really surprised if there was a ROM of it today, or if anyone even remembers it. But for like the year they were giving them out, everyone had it.
The entire existence of computers outside the last five years…
Yeah, that’s crazy.
I guess all those $100 deals were used too.
So I guess at least used prices went down?
But I remember years ago a shuckable 12tb for like $120-140 on sale wasnt unusual on buildapcsales.
considering they’re used server parts.
That really should be in the title…
I dunno, I’m one of those people who never stops using a drive until it breaks, and they never really break anymore. Oldest in my current PC is probably 20 year old HDD.
So yeah, these probably are fine and will still last a long time. But for like $20 more you don’t have to worry about losing the data on it.
Edit:
Apparently prices just haven’t changed in half a decade or longer? I knew prices went up for COVID, assumed they went back down at some point.
This would kill their entire TV division…
Especially when streaming becomes 4k standard and we get the glory days of cheap screens again when 1080p was the best.
The reason cheap 4ks aren’t as good as all about the processor to upscale to 4k. If the source is already 4k cheap screens become surprisingly good.
Which means no one would pick $50 one time savings for a lifetime of ads on anything the TV is used for.
Short term tho, this will make money, and quarterly profits are all that matters when focus is on stock price. Roku is going to run themselves into the ground with this.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Technically every 40 years is still routine, you just won’t have to do it more than twice.
Probably only once.
Any other nuggets of wisdom?
You should probably understand the first one before moving on
That’s a lot harder…
Not just to design and come up with, but to get people to even try it.
The smart move is to make something like this, release your own game, then release the fan project which brings visibility to your original game.
What?
I remember this game, and this wasn’t anything compared to the time I rented Battletoads for a weekend.
That game taught kids failure
Yeah, dude tried to open his own personal Netflix and is surprised it got taken down.
From post history he managed to keep it up for less than a month.
I’m betting by “friends” he meant either online friends he’s never met, or people he wanted to impress.
So they gave zero fucks and handed it out to more people. Like, just the idea that you’re giving it to so many people that you actually buy a domain?
There’s a reason everyone isn’t already doing it already.
