for some reason, all these devices i see around these days seem to run android (one of 5/6/7/8 based on the exposed ui) or win10… haven’t seen any linux desktop-ish thing here

AFAIK iknowwhatyoudownload gets their data from DHT and public trackers. i’ve also had numerous cases where I only seeded literal linux ISOs or some music and have weird porn or random tv show episodes shown on that site from my IP which I had only one machine connected for a fairly long time, not behind CGNAT. it appears to be that some public trackers sometimes report bogus data for some reason, claming some random IP is seeding some random file when they’re in fact not. you can see many items on public indexers where the seeder/leecher numbers shown aren’t accurate (mostly >0 when it’s a completely dead torrent), i suspect this is also the same reason.
exact same first and last seen timestamp, probably bogus data reported by the tracker not a legit download
lol no, these smart watches are powerful as older smartphones, their stock os is already android/linux based.
there’s pending and uncorrectable sectors, stop using it. is this an external drive? considering the read error rate it might be caused by a cable issue, or possibly even the power source.
back in the days when i had no drives i’d zerofill the whole drive and perform a bad sector check, then partition it so that the bad sectors are skipped then use the remaining parts. i don’t recommend doing this if you can afford proper replacements though, and it’s also very likely to get worse over time.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Best remote control option to support non-techies
2·10 days agowell yeah, it surely is. win10 iot ltsc itself is defo getting support till 2032, but massgrave’s hwid/tsforge may get blocked at some point, though most people highly doubt that since m$ doesn’t really care at this point. (heck, the massgrave repos are hosted on m$ owned github) in addition to that, massgrave’s hwid mode generates an hwid on microsoft’s servers just like genuine windows licenses, so i’m pretty sure it’ll remain working, even if the method to generate hwid gets blocked somehow…
i do believe switching to a gnu/linux distro is a much better choice, but this is also an option if your relatives really prefer using windows or need to.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Which directories should I back up in Windows before moving to Linux?
3·12 days agoif you have the storage, just dump the whole drive. you can then boot that windows installation again, or even use it on a vm under linux.
it’s generally a good idea to not have your home folder accessible to windows programs running under wine. other than that, i don’t see the need for an antivirus. keep your system updated, and use virustotal for the occasional suspicious file

11·14 days agohas anyone tried their iOS client? from their description it seems like it’s less mature than the android version, kinda concerning as my friend group has some iphone users.

they’re probably disconnected from internet, most likely misconfigured kms server or smth
