Do you really think ppl don’t break their wayland setup? For example, some systems don’t get a mouse cursor in wayland umless they switch the cursor to software rendering. To do that, they must often set an env var for the wayland process, but there is no standard way to do it. Half of them starts tinkering with their PAM and the others with their .profile . Sometimes this breaks every way to log in.

😯 how many tabs did you open?
I’m not using swap on my work and gaming PCs > 10 years now. I first started to question I need it, when I got a new PC going from 512MB to 2GB. Now I have 20GB in one of them and I don’t think I will ever be able to fill it all up until I get an upgrade again.

I think it would be wise to disconnect it from the internet, wifi and bluetooth; then it should be fine.
you’re not the first. there absolutely are multiplatform launcher scripts. i have used one for installers a few years ago.

lurch (he/him)@sh.itjust.worksto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Am I allowed to use gentoo if im not 40+ or dating?9·5 months agoUpdating on Gentoo works with it’s package management, but the actual packages are source code archives (and maybe patch files). It downloads them, compiles and installs them in a special build environment, then, if it worked, applies them to the system and removes the old version.

That part of my comment isn’t about WMs and compositors. It’s about how hard it is to make macro that does a few clicks and types a few keys into an app etc… It’s still very hard in Wayland. I’m sure it will get better some day, but we’re not there yet.
lurch (he/him)@sh.itjust.worksto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Since Xorg is getting old, looking at trying Wayland WMs4·5 months agoTo clarify: This causes problems like ugly font rendering and some games not working, etc.
lurch (he/him)@sh.itjust.worksto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Since Xorg is getting old, looking at trying Wayland WMs21·5 months agoYou misunderstood totally. I’m not saying it’s not possible. There isn’t a compositor making use of those things, but many X WMs that do.
lurch (he/him)@sh.itjust.worksto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Since Xorg is getting old, looking at trying Wayland WMs8·5 months agoJava GUI applicatiins have to use the X compatibility layer of Wayland at the moment, because Wayland support hasn’t been integrated into JREs yet
lurch (he/him)@sh.itjust.worksto linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Since Xorg is getting old, looking at trying Wayland WMs4·5 months agoDepends things like shaped window borders for theming, title bars in hyprland, effects, pagers, some automation options, etc…
What I generally miss in Wayland is better mouse automation support, Java support, the ability to have multiple mouse cursors and assign them to different input devices.

It still bothers me how toxic the hyprland devs behaved last year. Keeping an eye on that too 😉

Maybe Ubuntu should sell Anti-Ubuntu merch too, just like Elvis manager sold both, “I hate Elvis” and actual Elvis merch.
they are usually at the end
Spoken like someone who doesn’t have proper backups.
