Linux@lemmy.ml•It seems Linux Mint is dropping GNU coreutils in favor of rust-coreutils following Ubuntu.English
2·13 days agoYep! Ive used things that work perfectly for years in COBOL. It mostly doesnt matter what a thing is made out of unless I have to look under the hood and fix something.
Rust is fine. Its not revolutionary though its just another language. I made some cool one offs with it. But its everything else thats an issue.

6·13 days agoWe had things break at work because of rust-coreutils. I dont particularly care that its made in rust. It just needs to be stable and compatible.
However, the project is not 100% compatible with GNU coreutils. Putting aside the licensing issues, if it cant do what it says on the tin, then it should be on experimental linux distros not our most popular distros.
But this is linux/FOSS so people will do what they want. It means I wont use Mint, but its also ok for Mint to decide this. GL! hope everything works out either way.

1·13 days agooh nice, maybe ill give it a shot.
Unfortunately the project is reliant on quite old tech and parts nowadays.
A small apc has helped my tiny server stay up for the couple of min downtime that occurs yearly.
Excellent sticker.

5·1 month agoI feel you. HD space (and everything else) is sooo expensive. I have an old spinning drive for my peertube instance just cause is easy to source.

3·1 month agoThats good to know! Although if I am honest, ill probably just repurpose my current desktop that I am using for this conversation and get a new one if I end up re-doing my homeservers again.
Last thing I want to do is more work at home. So these are just “for fun” projects. If im not having fun, I start removing things from the setup.
