The garbage is another great source for treasure :)

Why’s that? So much of my treasure comes from estate sales etc, they don’t make stuff like they used to. I would say 90% of what I own has passed through someone else’s hands, and a pretty good chunk of em have themselves passed

As of last year Google was still the only real provider for RCS and its “encryption” was completely transparent to them. I’m currently using Deku SMS for normal texting (icky) and agree with the other comments recommending Signal as an actually usable modern messaging service

I put KDE Neon on this exact laptop for a friend and everything Just Works™. Pen, onscreen keyboard, switching in and out of tablet mode when you flip the lid, everything. Pretty slick really. Same distro on a Lenovo 2-in-1 was a lot more finicky, who knows why
I feel like you either didn’t read my comment or have been smoking a little too much weed lol
People hate rust because of its fences/training wheels, not because it’s “woke”
…actually I just saw someone in this very comment section ranting about “soydevs”, you’re not wrong. But there are valid complaints too! Some of us are just old and think our computers should do whatever we tell them up to and including “shit yourself and catch fire”
This guy thinks 11th gen intel is old x(
Might not be as easy, passthrough stuff can be a little tricky to set up sometimes, but once you get it going performance is identical
They would unplug our isp provided modem and take it to bed with them, so I tracked down another one from the manufacturer and copied the eeprom from theirs onto it. It was a simpler time :p
I’m old enough you have to replace “cracking neighbors wifi” with cloning our modem and “youtube” with funny pictures from irc homies, but same. Working around internet access restrictions was a milestone between fun things I could do with computers and how they really worked
Congrats, pretty sure “mom took away my internet” is the primary entry point for IT professionals

Zip it, snitch!

I remember people making this same argument but for social media, doesn’t make any more sense now than it did then. Corpos are the ones in control of that tool, using it helps them so much more than it does you. If you don’t want to support the ideology that developed it, you really need to just not engage.

Seconding gnucash, there’s modern stuff that’s slicker but nothing that works better imo
Understandable. Stay safe out there, thanks anyways :)
