I think realtime is on mainline now since 6.12 though so anyone with at least 6.12 should be able to use rt functionality.

I’ll continue to call it forge joe. It’s more cute. It’s like “where do I put these files?” “Just give them to Joe, he’ll know where to store them”.
noddy@beehaw.orgto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Which are the F-Droid apps everyone should download?1·1 year agoI like the Fossify apps. I use the phone, sms, contacts, gallery and file manager. It’s SO nice to not have google nag about cloud backups all the time, when I just wanted to look at some pictures I’ve taken.
Also whenever I can I download apps from F-Droid instead of play store if they’re available both places. For example I use Home Assistant, KeePassDX, Syncthing, Termux, VLC, and more from F-Droid.
Found a couple of new apps to try out in this thread as well :)

I agree it would be better if cross post comments were federated, but I guess there’s different opinions on that (do the lemmy devs agree for example?).
noddy@beehaw.orgto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Please don't use Discord for FOSS projects11·1 year agoIf it is possible to detect which posts are cross posts, it should be possible to create a client app that combines the threads. Maybe give you an option to chose which one to post your comment.
Good luck figuring out why it sometimes doesn’t work 🙃

noddy@beehaw.orgto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•get updates from facebook group without facebook ?1·2 years agoTried that for messaging once. It worked for like 2 days until facebook decided someone had “hacked” my account and I needed to reset my password. Didn’t help that the matrix bridge was very flaky and nigh impossible to set back up again after it failed, without just deleting the entire matrix database and starting from scratch. Not recommended.
noddy@beehaw.orgto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Is OsmAnd subscription/purchase worth it?13·2 years agoHave you tried the “OsmAnd~” version on fdroid? I think that one is basically the full version without a paywall. You could try yourself if you find it worth it, and buy the official app if you want to support the project.
I personally think opinionated software is better. If the maintainers need to add a bunch of features to please everyone, that’s going to be more work to maintain, and more work to set up an instance for example, as you would need to consider more options in the configuration. Being opinionated allows the maintainer to focus on polishing the main functionality, instead of battling tech debt in a project that has grown larger than initially intended.
I’ll use another controversial project as example. The Gnome desktop environment has gotten a lot of negative attention due to the opinionated implementation, e.g 3rdparty extensions/theming breaking on updates. As a gnome user myself I’ve been annoyed many times. But I’ve been using fewer and fewer extensions and gotten more used to the “gnome way” lately, and have come to really appreciating Gnome for what it is. I keep coming back to gnome after trying alternatives, as it works pretty good out of the box and is a cohesive experience.
I’ve played all sims games and all work on linux with wine. Sims 1 is the hardest to get to work because you need a CD crack to get it to run. Sims 2 and newer works great in my experience. I’d recommend using Bottles to install Sims 2. You can install it from CD and play it like normal. Need some tweaks to get widescreen though (but you have that issue on windows as well).
Sims 3 I’ve played in bottles through the EA app (I own a digital copy there). Worked out of the box (bottles has a way to install the ea store app easily). Sims 4 I’ve played on steam (using proton).
