I watch a lot of videos to this day from Bryan Cantrill (Oxide computer) and he’s got some wild stories about the forking of illumos and how difficult it was to essentially “save” Solaris. His company uses their own illumos based distro called heliOS on their oxide computer rack.

I just want to make sure I read this correctly. It says that if you’re a Plex plass holder already that remote streaming changes won’t affect your service. This means that if I have the lifetime subscription and host my own server than users whom have not payed for Plex pass can continue to access this server without issue correct?

This is funny. I feel like I see a “which arch is better” post almost everyday now.

A lot of people I think would be well suited to be on Bluefin or Bazzite. I really can’t sing the praises of it enough. It has a ton of well developed resources and the Appstore is flatpak centric. It really does give you that ChromeOS like experience for the average user.

End users should really be nowhere near package management. They should just be able to run the apps they want and expect them to work.

I have quite a few Nvidia GPUs I still use (2080,3080ti,3090) but recently purchased two AMD cards. I have a 5700xt and 7800xt.

I recently started using Universal Blue Linux as my daily driver on most of my systems. Bluefin for my desktop with Nvidia, Bazzite for my gaming PC with AMD.

They do both work however I have still had more issues with NVIDIA than AMD. For example, running games tends to be buggier but that is specifically an Nvidia driver issue. I’m guessing most hot fixes come out for the windows driver first. For instance, FF7 Rebirth does not render world geometry on Nvidia on Linux. I do not have this problem under AMD

I started purchasing the AMD cards because I was growing tired of waiting for Nvidia stability on Linux.

Is it much better than it was before , yes Do you use Nvidia CUDA apps or AI? Check, that works! Is it still as smooth and seamless as AMD, nope, you’re still going to end up with regressions.

I think it’s only a matter time before Nvidia finally figured this out as they heavily rely on Linux as a platform in their own work. But right now your best user experience overall is going to be on AMD hardware.

Depends on the usage. That’s the gamble you take. I would maybe buy three and put two in a mirror and keep the third one as a replacement?

That’s 240$ for three drives without warranty though… Nevermind I’d prefer to buy two new Toshiba X300 new for 210$ a piece and forget the headache and get the warranty.

I saw a video recently about the history of x11 development from retro bytes on YouTube and it is pretty much exemplary of the nature of open source development. I think I understand this whole conundrum a bit better.

The arch wiki is a very good resource and I use it for all Linux distros. But like most repositories of its kind, it gives you the how and not the why.

I’m pretty sure that this is because steam uses chromium as its backend and chromium new version doesn’t run on windows 7. It’s still not good because there are some games that won’t run on newer systems and therefore 7 is required for preservation.

I think voting with your wallet doesn’t quite work here because you’re not going to a competitor, you’re simply opting out. What happens is then they don’t see your platform of choice as the issue. All secretly gathered data points like your platform of choice often present a survivorship bias in the usage data.

With that being said, piracy has always been “… An issue of service not price” (GabeN) and I wholly support piracy as the alternative. I just don’t think these services like Amazon are going to ever get the memo.

I do have a weird Tin Foil hat feeling that they’re losing something Linux platform that’s more than support or DRM. What if it’s harder to monitor your usage on Linux platforms and they think that they can encourage you to leave the platform by forcing you to see lower quality so they can get those usage metrics back? (Again, tinfoil hat hypothesis)

Hi!I see a lot of great suggestions here but I was just looking at your chart and I think just one fundamental change would benefit you.

Think of your switch as the “core” of your network. Everything should connect to that switch (computers, access points, firewall) for your best experience/performance.

If you go with unifi, you should know that their switches are managed but if you intend to self host anything, you’re actually going to want the managed features!
