Oh, I didn’t mean to say I was using Plex there. Jellyfin + domain + reverse proxy is what I do for both Jellyfin and Seerr. I was just saying people who say “wireguard is the only way to go” aren’t taking into account all workflows, like sharing with family and having them connect via their TVs.
I also just don’t want family and friends on my home network all the time, haha.
Is it? I’ve heard it is fine as long as you are running a reverse proxy, using https, and following the conventional wisdom.
Exactly, I am not going to troubleshoot VPNs with my mother in law when they have an issue.
I do both. Wireguard VPN for anything that’s just me. Expose via nginx proxy for things that are shared with friends and family.
I’m saying Linux has a community that likes to talk about tweaking their systems, trying new things, discussing software, discussing distros, etc; Windows does not have users that do that for various reasons. It’s not shade on Linux at all, but to say that they don’t have a community talking about something as mundane as an OS is probably fine for them. I am glad we have the community and user engagement we have surrounding Linux.
I mean, that’s kind of good for them. Not having a creative community that has content to post about means they are just using the OS. The OS is out of the way. I’m guessing the level of comments that Linux gets are more likely to happen on niche forums like powershell or autohotkey or whatever. I dunno, I love my Linux, but do wish it were a little more normal and boring sometimes.
Yeah, I’ve had to help two friends connect to my server from Samsung TVs. It was annoying to say the least.
Yeah, that’s basically it. Buy a license and apply it when you install windows from the windows ISO installer on the VM.
If you’ve already used the license on a PC, you may need a new one or you might be able to transfer it if it’s a retail version, not an OEM version.
My work has licenses I can apply for VMs when I’m keeping them for longer client work, so yes they are licensed in my case.
I wouldn’t do that for my own personal use though.
I have given up dual-booting and just have a Windows VM for work things that require Windows. Less muss, less fuss and I can move the VM around as needed when moving between primary PCs.
Based on their early mode and communication, I think this was always the plan. VC culture is toxic 🙄
Don’t forget to add padding, so I’d just round it out to 18 months to be safe.
This is why I didn’t switch until this year. Valve really did a great thing by driving this adoption and I feel like with Proton in the state it’s in, there’s really not much you’re giving up by going to Linux these days.
The list of actual pain points is ever shrinking now. I can’t imagine switching back in 95. You had to put up with so much inequity for a lot of that time.
