  • For me I was using SearXNG for years now, by rotating public instances. So this private one is basically the same, just private. The search results are really not great to be honest. That’s why I sometimes used other search engines back and forth, especially if the instance got blocked a lot or was no longer available. And a few times I still access Google directly, if the prior search results were nonsense. Most of the time the search results with SearXNG are satisfying enough for me that this is a non issue. I’m okay paying with a bit inconvenience or worse results. I’m not dependent too much on web search anyway.

  • I think you don’t understand what LFS is. It is not a distribution you move on to, you build it from the ground up yourself following instructions and understanding how it works. Gentoo does all of that for you, you just have a ready to go distribution where you compile applications from source; you can even use binary builds to avoid compiling complicated and big apps.

  • I want to highlight a few mods (because this question will come up eventually :-) ):

    Alex Kidd in Miracle World_

    • Snappy Snorg and the Seven Silver Stones: Total conversion with different graphics and gameplay, including puzzles. High quality.
    • Octo Unleashed: Impressive conversion with good graphics and atmosphere.
    • Stella in Adventure World: A more traditional style of gameplay with new character, story and level designs.
    • Voyage - A Sorceress Vacation: Total conversion with new gameplay, character, graphics and story.

    Sonic_

    • Boxguy Adventure 2: Part of a multiplatform series. Play as a new character within its own levels structures.
    • NC Revision: Keeps main game intact, but updates graphics to very beautiful style. Other improvements in gameplay and miscellaneous alterations are made as well.

    Sonic 2_

    • Frenzy: 7 zones with secrets and alternate paths, making up to 21 levels. Further some changes to graphics and musics as well.
    • Zen Island: Main game stays intact, but with changes to graphics palette, music and and a little bit on gameplay.

    Phantasy Star_

    • Makeover: Redesigns graphics (including Character Sprites Improvement hack) inspired by graphics from PlayStation 2 Phantasy Star Generation 1.
    • Easy Patches (Double Meseta and XP): Collection of patches to reduce the grind. Simply double the money and xp earned from battles.

    Super Boy 4_

(Note, Super Boy 4 is an unlicensed game in Korea that is a bad knock-off clone of Super Mario games. It has this uncanny effect of Mario games, but just in bad and wrong.)

    • Individuality Improvement: Changes the graphics to something new and unique, getting rid of or the Super Mario aesthetics. Or makes changes so it looks a bit more unique than before.

Wonder Boy 5 Monster World (E)_

    • Sram Pad Enhancement Hack: Adds a save function so you don’t need to use passwords (or save states). Coloring are also adjusted, as the original colors can be ugly.

  • I don’t feel safe doing so. Would a script be able to run escalated rights without asking me a password? Is it somewhere displayed that such a process is started (notification in example or at least in the terminal a message?). And even for applications I am directly starting, I want it be explicit to require a password, that I am always aware its escalated root rights the app has now.

I can understand your view of convenience and I am “guilty” of some convenience stuff too. But this goes a bit too far for my taste.

  • I sometimes prefer Flatpak over AUR, because I do not trust everyone on the AUR to run scripts with root rights on my system. At least Flatpaks are a bit sandboxed (even if the sandbox is an illusion) and the programs don’t install and run with root rights. Sometimes the Flatpak is from the original developer and the script in AUR is not. Or the AUR script is not updated well and often enough, unlike day one Flatpak updates. But Flatpaks do not integrate well in your system and applications can look out of place too. There is a lot to consider, besides what you already mentioned.

I use both, prefer the AUR in optimal cases.
