breakingcups@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is this massive difference to be expected?English6·4 months agoIs there typically such a massive difference between using http://local_ip:3000 and https://speed.mydomain.com/?
Only if they resolve to different addresses.
Thanks for the laugh
breakingcups@lemmy.worldto Linux@lemmy.ml•Possible to Transfer Windows 11 Key to Virtual Machine?5·5 months agoBe aware that hardware access from a virtual machine(for an audio interface, for example) can be jittery or slow (latency), which might make it unusable for your purposes or not. You’ll have to find out.
Like that time they made their own Powershell imitation of curl? (before deciding it was an abomination and finally including stock curl, but not removing the old Powershell commandlet because of backwards compatibility so now
curl
andcurl.exe
are two different things and you’ll want the latter)
… You mean desktop.ini?
I would add: until it doesn’t.

breakingcups@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Would you buy "self-hosted in a box" hardware?English111·10 months agoNo. People who want the benefit of self housing without worrying about hardware will rent a vps or something simpler. The hard part of hardware isn’t the purchase, it’s the maintenance.
Also, why the separate router?
Funnily enough, the reason they switched to those was to use the data to train machine learning (AI) models, just like Google’s recaptcha was originally pictures of words from old, scanned books so they could transcribe all of them “for free” and train their transcription algorithms.
Have you passed their captive portal before turning on the VPN?

breakingcups@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is Backblaze a reliable provider?English6·1 year agoIt’s alright. I use both their desktop backup service and B2 extensively. Their desktop client and web interface is very basic and a bit rough, you don’t buy their service for the well-developed UI. The service works as advertised though.

Which is traditionally why you needed the distro to package your software…
So you’re always behind, patching up small bits of code that don’t comply with your guidelines, while letting big changes with, by deduction, worse code quality through?
Depends on why you want to hide your server ip, what’s your use case? Is it to protect against DDOS?
Cloudflare is evil, but is there any other party you would trust to share everything with?
