It needed an updated updater to be up-to-date on updates.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Some of my usb ports not working in MintEnglish
2·2 months agoMy family still runs two of this mobo, but older revisions. I remember hearing about bugs with IOMMU but I can’t recall any USB or other problems.
IOMMU can be disabled in BIOS; it seems that it would only be useful if passing devices through to a virtual machine? Is that a valid assessment?

2·4 months agoR6700 can run FreshTomato firmware.
Edit: If you do flash custom firmware, be sure to figure out exactly what model of R6700 you have; I think this is one of those in which v1/v2/v3 all have completely different hardware inside, and flashing the wrong one can brick it.

3·4 months agoI run a GTX 980 Ti; Maxwell architecture is still supported for three years. Older than that: Kepler support ended last year and Fermi support ended in 2023, and they won’t play nice with kernels released since then.
I had a boomer drop off a laptop after Win7 got updated to 8. Post-it note read: “I’m used to Windows with the “e”. Is Windows even on here?”

14·8 months agoI saw one Microsoft help page in which the customer service agent recommended to cut power to the PC during the Windows 8 or 10 boot process, three times! After three failed boots, newer Windows will bring up the UEFI boot options dialog.
My Sharp PC-7000 has a Setup key on the keyboard.

3·8 months agoSometimes this works. Sometimes it makes the PC speaker beep for two minutes straight while it slowly makes its way through the keyboard buffer.
That’s funny! If someone was trying to infect my PC via e-mail, I would expect them to be sending pdf files.

Linux@lemmy.ml•[Solved - VSYNC/screen tearing] Stuttering on Nobara with 3080 TiEnglish
1·10 months agoNo problem. I think in my case only Wine/Proton games were doing it and native Linux games were fine. I shake my fist at Nvidia and carry on. 😂

Linux@lemmy.ml•[Solved - VSYNC/screen tearing] Stuttering on Nobara with 3080 TiEnglish
5·10 months agoTry this setting: Display Configuration > Screen tearing: Allow in fullscreen windows. Whatever it’s set to, try the other setting. I had a similar issue once and this fixed it. The issue came back a long time later and switching it again fixed it. 🤷♂️
It’s a difficult issue to pin down. I’ve also read about video stuttering while trying to stay synched to pipewire audio which is having buffer underruns, even if your audio sounds fine. To check the audio buffer, you install and run
pw-topand then watch it while you are having the video problem.
In the worst-case scenario, yes… but the wording on the Windows dialog literally says, “There is a problem with your device and you should scan it” and then when you do, “Your device is ready to use, no problems were found.” This, after it was ejected and got the safe removal notification. 🤷♂️
grub’s always been a hack. The first stage in 512 byte boot sector chainloads the second stage in the space between boot sector and the first sectors of first partition. Second stage chainloads the kernel. (This is my primitive gist.)
grub was never made for security, it just exists in a place where one would think security would be priority… but again, physical access = pwned, etc.
Not quite the same, but funny: I recently unlocked an HDD from a car head unit to prove to a friend that it was only storing music ripped from its CD drive (and the associated minimal CD title database)… Toshiba master HDD password is 32 spaces. 😅

I’m no expert but it’s fairly easy to mitigate.
From https://archlinux.org/news/nvidia-590-driver-drops-pascal-support-main-packages-switch-to-open-kernel-modules/
Translates to:
sudo pacman -Rdd nvidia nvidia-lts nvidia-dkmsyay -S nvidia-580xx-dkmsIn attempting this, I still had a conflict with lib32-nvidia-utils, so this should work better:
sudo pacman -Rdd nvidia nvidia-lts nvidia-dkms lib32-nvidia-utilsyay -S nvidia-580xx-dkms lib32-nvidia-580xx-utilsUsing
yay -Syy nvidia-580xx-dkms lib32-nvidia-580xx-utilsmeans you don’t have to manually approve these replacement packages in the process, I think?EndeavourOS, BTW
