The fact that most people assume Arch is a broken mess because of a meme is wild. Same people would think Linux is impossible to use if they used Windows still.

I never understand why in 2024 you’d buy nvidia, unless you like paying more for less, or buying from scalpers for even more money. I guess some people really just go “More money spent on it, more better” no matter what.

It’s not inherently bad, it “fails” the Unix Philosophy of “Do one thing and do it well” but since Linux’s kernel is:

• Unix-like, not Unix
• Fails this philosophy, as it does more than one thing but does all of it pretty well
• systemd is just a bundle of tools that do one thing and do it well under one package, like Linux’s kernel

It used to be a mess, but that’s solved. The biggest reason to avoid systemd is mainly user preference, not anything malicious. 90% of current distros use systemd as its easier for the maintainers and package programmers to build for the general than each package and each distro having their own methods of how to do an init system and other tasks.

How Debian and Arch and Gentoo and Slackware and other big distros worked was different, and the maintainers of those packages had to know “Debian’s way” and not a general way that most places accept. Systemd actually solved the Too Many Standards! issue.

I’ve never really seen a big argument against systemd, but maybe I’ve just not heard it.

Windows helped to bring the concept of an operating system to the masses too. Does that mean it’s impossible to ever ruin it’s reputation?

Even now with more eyes on GNU, Herd still isn’t a serious kernel. BSD has more users and support than GNU Herd.

I thank the GNU community for making wonderful tools and making libre software possible, but it doesn’t exactly deserve top billing.

Linux without GNU can live, with BusyBox or Android. GNU without Linux would have never taken off. Though I’m curious if in another timeline without GNU, Linux might not have taken off, as GNU had all the tools but no kernel.

Linux Mint has a Debian edition available, I’m curious about that one.

Anything else I flirt with and then drop promptly once I can’t find the time to really learn it.

That happens on any mouse. Do you not clean yours? I have had trackballs and standard optical ones. Both get grimey from use, and proper cleaning makes both last longer.

So many people here are butthurt because of a small meme that pokes fun at what 90% of end users experience.

Its not Linux’s fault they can’t take a joke about windows. And yet somehow we are the elitist snowflake gatekeepers, or whatever buzzword they wanna use today.
